Our Story so far

Battlefield Bakery was established by Stuart Anderson in June 2014 at the age of 20, after completing an HND in Hospitality Management and gaining experience in the baking industry Stuart set up a manufacturing bakery unit at his family home at High Drumclog Farm.

Baking and the hospitality industry have always been a major part of his life, his first memories include making pancakes with his Gran and when old enough he started working with his family in their restaurant in Carluke, The Chardonny.

Stuart/ Battlefield Bakery initially sold its produce at farmers markets in Lanarkshire, Ayrshire & Renfrewshire and haven’t looked back since. They started supplying a small number of deli, cafe and shops and the opportunity arose to take over Carraghers’s Deli, Lanark, in June 2016 and re branded the deli as The Duke’s Deli in 2017.

As well as baking and hospitality Stuart’s other passion in life is history especially local history which is reflected through the brands of both the Bakery and the Deli echoing the history of the Farm and the events that took place.

In the future he hopes to open an outlet in Ayrshire where the bakery all began and continues to grow with the farmers markets and he looks forward to promoting Battlefield Bakery, Scottish produce and Scottish history through The Duke’s Deli Hampers. Visit us today.

The history behind the name...

High Drumclog Farm where the Bakery and Deli are based was originally owned by The Duke of Hamilton and was part of his Estate at Dungavel House.

Dungavel house was originally a 19th-century hunting lodge and summer retreat for the Dukes of Hamilton linked to their then main house at Hamilton Palace. This was the preferred home of the 13th Duke from 1919, after the demolition of Hamilton palace, due to subsidence, arising from mining in the area.

Dungavel House was the planned destination for Rudolf Hess's doomed 1941 peace mission, to seek the intercession with the 14th Duke to try to end the war between Britain and Germany. The Nazi deputy Reich Fuhrer claimed to have met the Duke of Hamilton at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin and hoped to negotiate peace terms with the British Government using Hamilton as mediator.
